Kitchener stitch makes my head hurt

I spent the weekend working on Practice Sock #2. I got to the end and tried my hand -- once again -- at a little kitchener stitch seaming. But it just doesn't work. For some reason, the wrong side ends up looking wonderful, but the right side looks like a big nasty seam. What am I doing wrong? Really...I'm loving this whole sock thing, but if I can't get the final toe seam to work, it ruins the whole project. Any advice?
